Who invented the Internet?- History of the Internet

The medium of communication became popular on about 6-7 years back in India. But even before 25-35 years, back people used a communication platform like this based on the basic concepts of the Internet.

As soon as the computer invented, the US Department of Defence started the invention of the Internet. In the year 1957, they started an agency to research the Internet, called Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). They used to connect together all the computers of the Defence Department to a central computer. This main computer-controlled the entire computer network of the office. But the major problem they have faced was the failure of the main computer caused the failure of the entire network.

At the same time, Paul Baron of Rant Corporation invented a new idea of networking. The main feature of this network system is multiple hosts and multiple connections among these hosts. This was an experience, as each computer was connected independent and it reduces the chances of network failure much more. Even if one or two computers failed to work, the rest will work properly. It was quite impressive that each computer was connected like a thread in a fishing net and it was named Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET).

For transferring data, the technology of ‘Packet Switching’ was used. Four computers of the Defence Department Laboratory were connected together for transfer and collection of data in this network at first. It was the beginning done in and around 1969.

Further new computers were added in this network thus widened. In the year or around 1971, Hawai University started a network viz. ALOHNET.

In 1972, Mr. Vinton Cert was appointed as the Head of ARPANET and later he was known as the father of the Internet. He studied it in full and allowed other countries to come under this networking area. Norway and England were the first two countries connected in this network.

A new networking system was started in 1979 namely USENET without any connection to ARPANET. After two or more years, in 1981 two more networks viz. CSNET and BITNET started their operation. In this operating system, they used different computers from one and another. One is Main Frame Computers, another one Mini Computers and the last is Micro Computers. In need of a common language, they put all these different computers in a single network. So the created a common language known as Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/ IP).

Then in the year 1983, ARPANET recognized TCP/IP and all the other network systems connected to the ARPANET used this. Later, all these networks together became the INTERNET. In the year 1983, a special network system was formed viz. MILNET for the network of communication of confidential information in the US Department of Defence.

In the year 1985, the Foundation Net was formed which became a milestone of the history of the Internet.

There was another operator namely MSFNET and it was an important network for American Government. In the beginning, there were five supercomputers, thousands of universities, schools, colleges, and several research centers were the members of this network. MSFNET was using the same protocol of ARPANET. In the year 1989, lakhs of computers were connected to this network.

In 1990, ARPANET stopped their functioning and all their works were handed over to MSFNET.

In the year 1992, an Internet Society was legally formed and in the meantime, Mr. Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web (www). In the year 1994, the browser program developed and in the year 1995 computer language of Java developed and both are the two significant turning points in the history of the Internet.
