How does Internet work?

For Dial-up-connection, first the user dials to the Provider (ISP) using modem. Once the connection is established, the password and the user name are entered. The password and user name are verified by the ISP and then the user can enter the Internet. Now-a-days you can directly open Internet Browser from your Desktop. The connection is established using Node, Router and Server etc. Now let us examine these terms.

Node: Node is the Server which connects to the main Server. User first dials to the ode for which a telephone Connection is required.

Router: This connects one or more networks together and links it with Internet. In addition to this, router is linked with the Servers.

DNS Server: It is from the DNS that the Router gets the Server details on which each website is located. Router later connects the user to this Server.

Gateway: In India there are gateways in Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and Delhi which collects the messages from Router. Later gateways link up with Internet using submarine cables or telecommunication satellites like INTERSAT, IMMERSAT etc.

IP Address: The information in Internet is stored in different Servers in various places of the world and not in a central system. IP address helps us to find out these Servers. IP address for a Server is unique. For example, if one user browses for a website www.yahoo.com, router gets the information like Server details and IP address of the Server etc. from DNS Server. Using this IP address Router finds out the Server and the website is displayed on the screen.

Internet Backbone: The speed of Internet depends upon the speed of the connecting lines of the Router. These lines which connect the Router is called Backbone of the Internet.
