CAUSE OF LOW BACK PAIN

CAUSE OF LOW BACK PAIN

Anyone who has suffered low back pain knows how incapacitating it can be, the most obvious symptom being pain. However, the type, intensity and duration of pain varies greatly from person to person. Low back pain is usually defined as acute, sub acute, or chronic. Acute back pain lasts less than a month and is not caused by serious medical conditions. Sub acute pain lasts between one to three months. Pain that persists beyond six months is considered chronic; although it constitutes only one to five per cent of all low back pain.

Common causes of low back pain:

Musculoskeletal ( due to problem with the muscles, bones, joints or ligaments): This includes muscle strain, pulled  muscles due to injury or stress on the spine.

Muscle aches due to viral infection.

Arthritis - especially osteoarthritis (arthritis of joints in the spine). Aging discs cause bone growths or spurs on the vertebrae.

Osteoporosis: This condition described as a thinning of the bones causes vertebrae to become porous and brittle making them susceptible to fracture and deformity.

Slipped disc: The most common cause of low back pain. In this condition, the outer layer of the inter vertebral disc ruptures, causing the jelly like substance inside to ooze out.

Sciatica: A bulging inter vertebral disc presses the sciatic nerve causing pain.

Wear and tear: As part of the natural process of aging, the spongy discs between vertebrae dry out, hardens and gets thinner.

Menstruation or Pre menstrual syndrome (PMS)

In Children : Scoliosis, kyphosis- abnormal curvature of the spine.

Less common, but serious causes :

Tumours of the spine.
Tuberculosis
Rickets and osteomalacia
Bladder infection
Endometriosis
Ovarian cancer
Pregnancy
Kidney disease
Heart Disease
