TYPES OF HEADACHES
TYPES OF HEADACHES
Headache is an almost universal human experience. Most headaches are mild and transient and are either ignored or treated by the patient with over the counter medications. Headaches can also be severe and disabling, however, and generate 3 to 5 percent of patients.
There are two main types of headaches:
PRIMARY and
SECONDARY
Primary headaches include tension type, migraine, and cluster headaches and are not caused by other underlying medical conditions. More than 90 percent of headaches are primary.
Secondary headaches result from other medical conditions, such as infection or increased pressure in the skull due to a tumor. These account for fewer than 10 per cent of all headaches.
