MALAYALAM FILM REVIEW - THIS WEEK - MANNAR MATHAYI SPEAKING 2

This film is a sequel to two comical hits Ramjirao Speaking and Mannar Mathayi Speaking.
It doesn't brim with the kind of bubbly, ebullient humour which made the prequels so endearing. The humour in this film is more subdued, sometimes strained. The characters have become bloated versions of a boisterous youth.
Mamas should be given credit for his attempt to recast the mould of a classic comedy. However his earnestness is stifled by mediocrity. The scenes, which Keralites have laughed for years, recur with minute transitions in settings. The juicy, sweet-natured laughter which marked Ramjirao and Mannar Mathayi never happens here.
Mamas adaptation of characters is rather blind, devoid of freshness or even a new reason to laugh about them. Gopalakrishnan (Mukesh) is married with two children. He still lives with Mathayi and Balakrishnan (Saikumar) . They have switched from theatre to running a tours and travels company.
Laughter happens only as reminders of some of the genuinely funny moments which reappear with less flamboyance than the earlier versions. It's almost forced out of sympathy for the characters that had us in splits again and again without a tinge of tiredness.
If the characters had to stage kidnap dramas in the earlier versions for a cause and their goof-ups naturally made for ticklish laughter. Mamas does it for convenience. He has no other choice but to stage the same set of events including the dark, dusty so down where he manages a hastened convergence of characters to sort out all confusions. Mannar Mathayi Speaking 2 as a film lacks motive with not even a single scene that lives up to the stature of the previous films. Review by Aswin J kumar. TOI.
