Each of the 12 signs of the zodiac is a name given to a 30-degree arc of the sky, as viewed from Earth. As the Earth moves round the Sun, the Sun appears to pass from one 30-degree arc to the next, completing the journey through all 12 zodiac arcs in one year.
For example, a person whose birthday is on 1 January is born when the Sun is in the zodiac sign of Capricorn. This is referred to as a person's sun sign. Hence, a person born a month later, when the sun is passing through the next 30-degree arc, would have the next zodiac sign, Aquarius, as his sun sign.
