A YOUTH FESTIVAL FOR THE STUDENTS, BY THE STUDENTS Government collects Rs.5/- Child for organizing the event in Malappuram. Kochi:The 53rd edition of the state school arts festival will literally be a from-the-students-for-the-students-affair. For, the state government has asked schools to collect "voluntary" donation from schoolchildren to host the week-long event beginning in Malappuram from January 14. Around 12000 students are expected to compete in as many as 232 events.  More than 31 lakh students study in classes V to XII in government schools. This will help government raise nearly Rs. 1.5 crore. Incidentally the cost of conducting the event is estimated at Rs. 1.20 crore.

DRIVE AT YOUR OWN RISK ON HIGHWAY : ALAPPUZHA The NH-47 (National Highway 47) in the District, which was repaired last October, has once again turned a deathtrap for motorists. It's now full of potholes. Two wheeler riders falling off their vehicles after skidding while trying to avoid potholes is a common sight these days. On October 31, two youngsters died after their two-wheeler was knocked down by a tipper lorry on NH 47 at Kappakada near Ambalapuzha. They had suddenly cut speed on seeing a pothole.  The PWD repaired the national highway from Cherthala to Ambalapuzha last month following strong criticism by Ministers and the district collector. The repair work, which was started in the first week of October, was completed by the month end. However, now the road is once again full of potholes. 

CPM RAPS AMICUS CURIAE REPORT Tvm: CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday lambasted the report submitted by advocate Gopal Subramanyam, amicus curiae appointed by the Supreme Court in the Padmanabha Swamy Temple case. The amicus curiae had suggested that political parties should be kept away from the administration of the temple and given names to be appointed as CEO, Joint Executive Officer and Member Secretary, Expert Committee, of the temple administration board. Vijayan demanded the SC should dismiss the report as the official has tried to mislead the court and behaved as a royal servant.

An alarming majority of students belonging to SC/ST and OBC categories, who get into engineering colleges on the basis of reservations, fail to complete their courses and obtain a degree. UDF BACKTRACKS ON DEVASWOM ORDINANCE Tvm: The UDF has decided to do away with the controversial clause in the Devaswom ordinance. All Hindu MLAs can vote to elect their representative in devaswom boards. The government had earlier brought in an amendment that only those MLAs who have sworn in the name of god or declared their belief in temple worship through an affidavit could vote to elect the nominee of the board. Since the LDF had more Hindu MLAs than the UDF, Congress wanted to bring in this amendment to control the Travancore Devaswom Board. Other clauses such as scrapping of women’s reservation and selection of two general members by cabinet would remain.

German raped, robbed in Mumbai A German national was allegedly raped and robbed of her belongings by an unidentified person who barded onto her flat in suburban Bandra in the wee hours of Monday.  The victim, a 27 year old musician, was staying on rent on the third storey of a building located on the Perry Cross Road in Bandra West. The intruder entered the flat through the window and brandished a knife asking her to hand over her valuables, a senior police officer said. The victim parted with some dollars, Indian currency and a camera. The accused then raped her, according to the complaint filed by the victim with the Bandra Police.
