ONAM GIFT TO KERALITES BY UDF GOVERNMENT AND KSEB UDF Government has decided to give all Keralites with an expensive and unforgettable ONAM GIFT. They decided and started POWER CUT in the State Kerala from yesterday. Earlier it was 1/2 hour, not they are glad to decide it as 3/4 hours and power may go off several times during the night. We experienced two power cuts yesterday that one is at 8.15pm. When asked the simply polite KSEB men told us that the nightmare is started and it is now for 3/4 hours only. They stick on their words and the power came back at 9pm.  Interesting this is that the power got off when it is 9.30pm. Again called the simply polite "Namaskaram KSEB" people, they so politely told that it is also a load shedding and not to worry. Now it is for only 1/2 hours. KSERC TO ANNOUCE TARIFF HIKE TODAY Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission would officially announce the power tariff hike in the state on Thursday.  There would be up to 30% increase in tariff rates. Commission sources say those who use power judiciously won't be affected much by the tariff revision. the hike would be minimal for those who use below 150 units of energy a month and those who use more than 500 units of power a month would be heavily charged.

KERALA POLICE OUTSMART THE REST Kerala Police have outsmarted the rest of the police forces in the country in conducting investigation into various crimes, filing charge sheets on time and getting accused convicted for crimes. As per an official note released by the state police, Kerala Police have been ranked first in the country for filing charge sheets before the court on time in 2011. While the national average of filing charge sheets was  79.5% for every 100 cases, it was 95.6 in Kerala.  According to senior IPS officer and Kochi range inspector general K Padmakumar, the Kerala Police have set itself a high standard when it comes to investigating cases.

CAPTAIN LAKSHMI SEHGAL DEAD Captain Lakshmi Sehgal, Chief of INA women's regiment, dead. Lakshmi Sehgal, a close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the first head of the women's wing of the Azad Hind Fauj, died around 11.20 am on Monday at a private hospital in Kanpur. She was 97. She was in coma for the past three days after suffering a massive heart attack. GENERAL MANAGER KILLED IN MARUTI VIOLENCE Manesar: The victim of Wednesday's violence at Maruti Suzuki's plant here has been identified as a senior executive of the company, whose charred body was fund at the site of clashes.  Avanish Dev, who was the General Manager in the Human Resource Department was the lone person to have been killed in the violence between the workers and the management at the plant. UDF ALL SET TO RAISE PENSION AGE FROM 55 TO 60 YEARS Tvm: The UDF government is all set to increase pension age of government employees from 55 to 60 years. On Thursday, CM Oommen Chandy told the assembly that the government has been spending 75% of its revenue on paying salaries, pensions and interest. This would soon go up to 100%. Pensioners have now overtaken employees. We cannot go on like this. CENTRE PLANNING TO MAKE GROUNDWATER PUBLIC PROPERTY Rights over water in a private well won't be limited to landowners alone. In a move that would alter the management of groundwater in the country, the government proposes to alter laws and make water a public property - controlled by Central and State Governments and local bodies like panchayats as public trustees. This would give the community rights over ground water aquifers instead of just land owners who drill a well on their compound.

HIKE IN POWER TARIFF MOOTED As the monsoon continues to play truant, the government and the KSEB are mulling power restrictions and a hike in power tariff to tide over the crisis.  The board is heavily dependent on power from the central pool and power traders as the water levels in all major reservoirs hit rock bottom.  For the first  time power generation from hydel stations has dipped to a mere 10 mu per day. Earlier the board was generating 20 to 23 mu per day. 

RICE IS NOT BAD FOR DIABETICS : STUDY New Delhi: Rice is not the diet villain as commonly thought. In fact, two types of rice commonly consumed by India's middle classes have now been found to have the lowest Glycemic Index (GI) - the measure of its ability to raise blood sugar levels after eating - when compared with 233 other types of rice consumed around the World. Low GI foods are those measured 55 and less, medium GI are those measured between 56 and 69, while high GI measures 70 and above. Swarna and Mahsuri's GI levels were below 55. Another favourite among Indians - basmati - too fared well but figured in the middle GI group. This means that Indians, especially the country's 60 million strong diabetic population, need not worry about having rice in their diet.

The Union ministries of overseas Indian affairs, external affairs and home affairs will have a joint session in two weeks to finalize the rules to regulate trafficking of domestic servants under the garb of visiting visas. The minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi told reporters on Monday that the initiative had been launched in the backdrop of reports that certain recruitment agencies were sending women domestic servants to the Middle Eastern countries under visit visas. "At one point we wanted to ban sending women under visit visas, due to such cheating incidents.  Rules to counter women trafficking using visiting visas will be a good news.

RBI TO LAUNCH PLASTIC CURRENCY ON PILOT BASIS Amid instances of counterfeiting of notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said it is working on launching plastic currency and will launch a pilot project for it.  Under the pilot project, notes of Rs.10 denomination would be distributed through the Central Bank's five regional offices. Plastic notes would have an average life span of five years compared to one year for the paper notes.  So, RBI to launch plastic currency on pilot basis.

PREEJA'S DREAMS DASHED Asian Games gold medalist Preeja Sreedharan's Olympic dreams came crashing down after she failed to make the cut of London in the 10,000 m at the FIDAL Piedmount Track Meeting in Santhia, Italy.  Preeja's compatriot Kavita Raut also failed to achieve the Olympic qualifying standard in the race held on Saturday.  In their last qualification attempt before the July 8 deadline, both Preeja and Kavita had to abandon the race after 6,000m as they failed to chase the target time.
